In my economics education, most of the statistics and econometrics I had learnt focused on adopting an explanatory lens. We want to establish whether something has a significant effect on the outcome of interest, and we apply econometric techniques of varying complexity (typically some form of regression analysis e.g. instrument variables regression, diff-in-diff) to get around various biases (e.g. omitted variable bias, reverse causality) that would result in some form of biased estimate.

HDB seems to have updated their website such that the historical application rates are only available from Nov 2020. I also seem to have some issues with scraping Feb 2021 application rates which I have frankly not bothered to fix. Hence, the code which I used will need some updates to work properly. The csv file with my scraped data as of Sep 2020 can be found here.
